Time for Common Sense: Support Ukraine,
Britain Leads the Peace
Let’s be honest about what’s going on in Ukraine.
Supporting a nation's right to defend its home is fair enough. No one in Britain likes seeing another country pushed around. But spending and sending £billions in cash and weapons year after year without an exit strategy is just throwing fuel on an endless fire.
Right now, the British government is acting like an armaments dealer rather than a world leader.
It’s time for a bit of practical common sense:
1. You don't win a peace with attrition: Every single war in history finishes at a table. The question isn't whether there will be a deal; it's how many lives get lost before both sides sit down to build it.
2. Britain knows how to sort out a settlement: We built the Good Friday Agreement. We know how to deal with stubborn borders, identity splits, and tough security guarantees without making either side surrender. We should use that experience today to help Ukraine and Russia find a solution.
3. Transition from supply to statecraft: The UK has earned credibility in Kyiv because we backed them. That means they’ll actually listen to us if we propose a realistic compromise—like a solid ceasefire along current lines, backed by non-NATO security guarantees to make sure Russia doesn't step back over the line (again).
The British government must stop playing the warmonger hard case and start doing the hard work of being a peace broker - brokering a deal between Ukraine and Russia.
What do you think?
Is it time to follow America and look for a ceasefire?
